CASA ITALIA

It's always the right time to start your own business

Menche Nikolovska-Papesh
founder of Casa Italia

Some time ago, a journalist asked me: " When  you founded Casa Italia 28 years ago, did you have a clear idea of what that business should look like?"

Those who know me well, know how direct I am in communication and completely honest.

And so was the answer:

"I thought I had an idea, but what I know is that no matter how expert, knowledgeable and convinced that you know and can be, the fact is that people only learn business when they really start dealing with it. Why, many believe that if they knew what they were going to have as a challenge, they might never have started."

But not me…hence this little history of my road to success.

I was only 20 years old when I embarked on this adventure, with a loan of 5,000 German marks, back in 1993 from my sister's husband. For me, that amount was "filmic", and the opening of "Prvata Kaza" - as I like to say at the Universal Hall, was a real hit.

To bring Made in Italy designer pieces of furniture to a country that was just being formed after the breakup of the old Yugoslavia, to an area where there were wars next door, was madness.

For many, my 20 years for entering an unknown business were also crazy.

But I'm like the wind, college was a boring world for me and in less than two years I expanded my business.

After Skopje, I opened my own showroom in Bitola, and immediately after that I left the borders of Macedonia and Casa Italia was in Budapest, Bucharest and Sofia.

Then comes the year 2005, in which I made a different decision.

And that was to put my personal career and business on a break, with one noble goal, to become a mother.

And how illogical it may sound for such a widespread business to experience a brake, but my attitude in life is that what you do, do it completely, with all dedication and with all love....if you are not dedicated enough, don't improvise.

And then I decided to take an equally fearless step, to sell everything, except my company in Skopje, which I judged that I could manage and be sure that it would be placed on  top.

Where it deserves to be.

That break, conditionally taken, is a moment too late in my life, which from this distance I see as a wise and necessary decision that made me happy in many ways, and it was also a period of a different maturation that lasted some 7 years.

The two children and the funny life had a beautiful and harmonious dynamic.

And then I felt that now is the time for new challenges.

We made a decision to think of another end of the world, a terribly competitive destination for a business challenge "where sharks literally eat each other".

It was time for Casa Italia in Singapore.

We are still there today with our offices, and also in Skopje, where it all started.

Life on the Skopje-Singapore-Milan-Skopje route in the realization of top projects that are high end in our industry.

Today, I can freely conclude that my business, my Casa Italia, is a concept of beauty.

As well as architecture and interior design. If it is not beautiful, then it is neither architecture nor interior design.

Today I am what I am thanks to the courage, the instinct that never lied to me and the endless faith in myself and in the team I choose to work with.

My team always consists of top professionals. And there is no compromise here.

We believe in dedicated work, attention and an individual approach to each client, from the smallest to the largest...for us, clients are sacred. There are no words that can describe our joy when we see the glow of happiness in the eyes of all our clients when they see the result of our work whether it is their home or an investment in a business space.

You can't be at the top in this industry if you don't love what you do, if you don't continuously learn and improve, and if you settle for average.

This is also an industry that requires risk - a field that I have personally lived in since I was 20 years old.

You have to take risks. it's not a cliché, it's true.

Happiness follows the brave.

And something to end... or to start...

Life is now, in this moment and should be appreciated as such.

We will hardly create a better world - if we don't try.

In a better world, I work with my Casa Italia every day.
